About 4.4% of American adults that are aged 18 to 54 in one point in their lives are thought to have a specific phobia of a kind. This accounts for 6.3 million people. Women are more likely to suffer this type of phobia than men. One in fifty people in America suffer from a social phobia which means 1.95% of the population will experience a social phobia. Phobias are very common in western society. One of the most common phobias that people suffer from is agoraphobia. Phobias affect about one in 10 of us at some time in our lives. Usually only a tiny proportion of phobia sufferers seek any help.
